12 to 5V Voltage step-down for camera
Posted by admin on June 22, 2010

- The camera I have is powered with 3.3 – 5.5V, low power consumption up to 60mA. The ESC I have hase a built-in BEC : 5v / 3A, so i could power the camera from the BEC but since i have 4 servos which in some situations will operate at the same time so additional 60 mA from the camera “CAN” in some situations lead to a BEC failure. So i decided to build a 12V to 5V voltage step-down using a KA7805A 1A Positive Voltage Regulator.
- For details about this voltage regulator you can read the datasheet.

- I found this regulator in an old PC Power Supply. The connection is simple (see schematics), and the output voltage is min 4.8V and max 5.2V

- Here a list of things you will need.:
- KA7805 voltage regulator
- Soldering iron
- Four 20cm long peaces of wire (red, yellow, black, blue)
- A small alu passive cooler (see picture above)
- Small screw and the appropriate nut.
- Shrink tube 20mm
- Shrink tube 2mm

- Isolate the “legs” with 2mm shrink tube and then close everything with 20mm shrink tube. DONE!
